is a low-cost, Madison-based listserve host owned and administered by the Madison Independent Media Center.

Why are we doing this?

  • Yahoo Groups sucks. In fact, all the ad-sponsored corporate list services seem to suck (wonder why). They're slow, hard to administer, they load your messages with ads, and they're run by nasty monster corporations. Ick.
  • Local control. If the server needs repairs or updates, it's right around the corner. We can fix problems as they occur.
  • Fund raising. The Madison IMC needs funds so we can pay for connectivity and rent office/meeting/studio space, and we have the technical experience and hardware to provide this sort of service below market rate.
  • Reliability. The main Indymedia mailing list server has been getting flaky lately, as have the servers used by other allied organizations. The more we can decentralize list service, the more reliable our communication will be. Mailman runs faster and more reliably on its own server.
