This election year, Madison will host two creative and celebratory events that have the potential to challenge and change electoral history. The PNC will demonstrate and exercise the power of the people and grassroots democracy while the DNC in Denver and the RNC in St. Paul sell citizens their glossy packaged version of democracy that no longer substitutes for the real thing. While protesters gather to challenge the DNC and RNC on their turfs, Madison will host a national counter-convention to practice direct democracy in our grassroots organizing efforts together, away from the politicians and their grandiose schemes of hoarding power.

The GrassRoutes Caravan is a pedal-powered village on a mission of community service projects to help out with flood relief, community gardens, river clean-up and other needs in southeastern Wisconsin while transporting nearly 50 riders to the RNC in Minnesota without burning gasoline. The Caravan will demonstrate in motion the power of the bicycle as a real form of transportation and a tool for the liberation of people who are willing to ride the distance together in intentional community. The Caravan will also feature art, music and performance by local folk singer Thistle, Nora and Gnoll from Springfield, Missouri, a bilingual puppet show by the Neverwood Collective focused on getting beyond electoral politics, and a member of the Beehive Colletive and their artwork/presentations. There will be a public send-off of the Caravan from the PNC starting at 6 PM at Troy Gardens on Sunday, August 17th.
